One segment up 45%, the other down a third
CKD Corporation (TSE: 6407), a maker of pneumatic components and automatic machinery, published consolidated results for the three months to June 30, 2026 on August 10, 2026 under Japanese GAAP. Net sales rose 35.5% to ¥49,108 million, operating profit 112.9% to ¥8,032 million, ordinary profit 122.5% to ¥8,242 million and net profit 129.5% to ¥5,686 million, for earnings per share of ¥85.09 against ¥37.09. Comprehensive income was ¥10,207 million, up 213.0%.
The two segments went in opposite directions, and the larger one decided the quarter. Components grew external sales 45.4% to ¥46,072 million and profit 112.4% to ¥8,751 million. Domestically, generative-AI demand drove semiconductor capital spending and sales into semiconductor production equipment rose sharply; automotive-related sales fell because carmakers' capital spending came in below expectation. Overseas, China was solid in both semiconductors and secondary batteries, and other regions rose on strong semiconductor-related investment.
Automatic Machinery went the other way: external sales down 33.5% to ¥3,036 million and profit down 26.3% to ¥738 million. Pharmaceutical capital spending continued against a background of persistent supply shortages, but sales of drug-packaging machines fell temporarily and the company concentrated instead on expanding packaging services — maintenance and modification of installed machines. Sales of lithium-ion battery production systems also fell as Japanese carmakers stayed cautious on BEV-related investment. Notably, the segment's margin improved even as revenue fell by a third, which the company attributes to that service expansion and to continuing productivity work.
A build in working capital, and an unusual dividend disclosure
Total assets rose 6.7% from the March year-end to ¥241,918 million, mostly in working capital and investments: electronically recorded receivables up ¥2,779 million, finished goods up ¥1,296 million, raw materials and supplies up ¥5,166 million and investment securities up ¥5,159 million. Liabilities rose ¥8,264 million to ¥81,448 million, including ¥1,969 million more in notes and accounts payable. Net assets rose 4.5% to ¥160,470 million, but because assets grew faster the equity ratio eased to 66.3% from 67.7%.
Guidance was revised upward with these results: net sales of ¥193,000 million (+22.2%), operating profit of ¥28,500 million (+45.1%), ordinary profit of ¥28,500 million (+43.5%) and net profit of ¥19,000 million (+39.9%), for earnings per share of ¥284.29. The quarter has delivered 28.2% of the raised full-year operating-profit target.
The dividend disclosure is worth reading carefully because it is unusual. The annual dividend forecast was also revised, to ¥112.00 from the ¥81.00 paid for FY3/2026 — a 38.3% increase — but the company states that the interim and year-end amounts for FY3/2027 are undetermined. Only the annual total is guided; the split between the two payments has not been set. For reference, the prior year's ¥81.00 was paid as ¥32.00 interim and ¥49.00 final.
