Two lines moving in opposite directions
People Co., Ltd. (TSE: 7865) published non-consolidated interim results for the six months to July 20, 2026 on September 1, 2026 under Japanese GAAP. Net sales fell 12.1% to ¥561 million and the operating loss narrowed to ¥110 million from ¥176 million, with the ordinary loss narrowing to ¥114 million from ¥177 million. The interim result was a net loss of ¥151 million against an ¥8 million profit, for a loss per share of ¥39.38 against earnings of ¥1.96.
The two directions are easy to reconcile once the items below ordinary profit are laid out. The prior-year half turned an ordinary loss of ¥177 million into an ¥8 million net profit only because it booked a ¥184 million gain on the sale of investment securities as extraordinary income. This half has no such gain and instead carries a ¥37 million impairment loss, taking the pre-tax loss to ¥150 million. On the operating line, which is where the business actually shows, the loss is a third smaller than a year ago.
Operating cash flow was an outflow of ¥86 million, following the pre-tax loss.
A shrinking market the company says is not only about demographics
The company is unusually direct about its market. The infant and toddler toy market continues to shrink, and while it names Japan's falling birth rate as one factor, it argues that the biggest problem is that the products currently on the market have failed to capture what parents now want — the values and behaviour of child-rearing households have changed substantially, and the assortment has not followed. It says conditions remain harsh and it is struggling in the near term.
Its answer is what it calls the "curiosity business": pursuing children's curiosity as a fundamental theme in order to create added value, and treating the shrinking market as an opportunity to build a new one. Following 1curiosity, launched in 2025, it released a second line this half — the new baby-toy brand Baby curiosity, drawn from observations of the curiosity behaviour of nought-year-olds accumulated by its "People Baby Research Institute" project over more than 40 years. Fourteen renewed items shipped in April and eight new ones in July, for a 22-item series that includes refreshed long-sellers such as Nameraretaro and Mahou no Rattle.
A debt-free balance sheet, and guidance only as far as the third quarter
Total assets fell 7.6% from the January year-end to ¥1,672 million and net assets 9.0% to ¥1,529 million, so the equity ratio eased to 91.5% from 92.8% and net assets per share to ¥399.72 from ¥439.03. At that level the company is effectively unleveraged, which is what gives it room to absorb a run of losses. Issued shares are 4,437,500 with 611,352 held in treasury; the weighted average fell to 3,826,148 from 3,998,723.
The company publishes no full-year forecast, and explains why: its annual result is dominated by the October–December year-end shopping season, so given that characteristic of the toy market it discloses only the next quarter it can see. For the nine months to October 20, 2026 it expects net sales of ¥984 million (−6.1%), an operating loss of ¥108 million, an ordinary loss of ¥111 million and a net loss of ¥148 million, for a loss per share of ¥38.65 — figures unchanged from the previous announcement.
The dividend follows the same logic. No dividend was paid for FY1/2026, and for FY1/2027 the company says it will decide in line with the full-year outlook and announce a year-end forecast once it can judge how the year-end shopping season has gone. Figures in this filing are rounded rather than truncated to the nearest million yen.
