Business Description
Japan Tobacco Inc. manufactures and sells cigarettes and heated-tobacco products, with Winston, Camel, Mevius and LD among its main brands, alongside smaller pharmaceutical and processed-food businesses. The international tobacco arm, JT International, is headquartered in Geneva and contributes the great majority of group profit.
The company was created in 1985 from the former state salt and tobacco monopoly and remains roughly a third owned by the Japanese finance ministry, a stake fixed by law. It closes its financial year in December rather than March, and long-running growth has come from overseas acquisitions — Gallaher and the international brands of R.J. Reynolds among them — and from pricing rather than volume, as cigarette consumption declines in most developed markets.
