Business Description
Ibiden's electronics segment makes package substrates — the multilayer boards that connect a semiconductor die to the circuit board beneath it. It is the principal supplier for Intel's server processors and holds a leading position in the FC-BGA substrates required by AI accelerators, a bottleneck component whose lead times and capacity have constrained the industry. A separate ceramics segment makes diesel particulate filters and catalyst carriers for the auto industry.
Substrate demand for AI has driven a heavy capital-spending programme, including the new Ono plant in Gifu, which makes the company's earnings unusually sensitive to how quickly those investments fill. Founded in 1912 as Ibigawa Electric Power, a hydroelectric operator on the Ibi River — the source of the name — it moved into ceramics and then electronics as the utility business was nationalised.
