Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.

Japan's most valuable drugmaker, majority-owned by Roche and built on antibody research that produced the haemophilia blockbuster Hemlibra.

A Chugai Pharmaceutical site

Business Description

Chugai Pharmaceutical discovers, develops and sells prescription medicines, concentrating on oncology, immunology and specialty care. Its own laboratories produced Actemra for rheumatoid arthritis and Hemlibra for haemophilia A, both licensed worldwide to Roche; royalties and overseas supply of those molecules now account for a large share of profit.

Roche took a majority stake in 2002 under an alliance that leaves Chugai separately listed and separately managed while giving it first refusal on Roche's pipeline for the Japanese market. The result is an unusual hybrid — a domestic marketer of imported drugs and, at the same time, an originator whose discoveries are commercialised globally by its own parent. Founded in 1925 and incorporated in 1943, the company reports on a December fiscal year, unlike most Japanese listed companies.
