Business Description
Otsuka Holdings runs two very different businesses of comparable weight. Pharmaceuticals concentrates on central-nervous-system and oncology drugs, led by Rexulti for schizophrenia and depression, the digital therapeutic pipeline, and Jynarque for kidney disease; nutraceuticals covers the sports drink Pocari Sweat, the Calorie Mate nutrition bar, Bon Curry retort food and Nature Made supplements.
That pairing is deliberate: the consumer arm generates steady cash while the drug arm carries the patent cliffs, and the group has repeatedly funded pharmaceutical R&D through periods when a major product lost exclusivity. The holding company was created in 2008 to combine Otsuka Pharmaceutical with the food and beverage companies of the Otsuka group, whose origins go back to a chemical business founded in Tokushima in 1921. It reports on a December fiscal year.
