Business Description
Electronics and Automotive Systems is the largest segment: wire harnesses and components that carry power and signals through a vehicle, plus connectors, thermal-management parts and electronic materials. Infrastructure covers optical fibre and cable, submarine and terrestrial transmission systems, power cable and the network equipment sold to telecom carriers and data-centre operators. Functional Products supplies copper foil, aluminium products, heat pipes, plastics and battery components, and a small services and development unit holds new-business projects.
Roughly half of sales come from outside Japan, which makes the yen a direct earnings lever, and copper is the other one: cable contracts pass metal prices through with a lag, so a fast move in copper shows up in margins before it shows up in pricing. Demand is currently pulled by two things at once — data-centre construction, which consumes optical fibre and high-count cable, and vehicle electrification, which raises the copper content of every car. The company grew out of Furukawa Ichibei's copper mining and refining business and was incorporated in June 1896; the wider Furukawa lineage also produced Fujitsu, Yokohama Rubber and Furukawa Co. The fiscal year ends in March.
