Business Description

Sumitomo Electric Industries reports across automotive, infocommunications, electronics, environment and energy, and industrial materials. Automotive — wiring harnesses, connectors and anti-vibration rubber — is by far the largest segment, and the company ranks among the top three harness suppliers worldwide.

Elsewhere it makes optical fibre and cable, compound-semiconductor devices for optical communications, superhard cutting-tool materials, and power transmission cable including the submarine cable used to connect offshore wind farms. The harness business is labour-intensive and produced largely in low-cost countries, which ties margins to wage costs and to global vehicle build rates. Founded in 1897 as the Sumitomo house's copper wire works and incorporated in 1911.
