Business Description
Japan Post Holdings sits above three listed or formerly listed subsidiaries: Japan Post Co., which runs mail, parcels and the counter network of more than 20,000 post offices; Japan Post Bank, the country's biggest deposit-taker; and Japan Post Insurance, one of its largest life insurers. Most of the group's profit comes from the two financial units rather than from mail.
The structure is a legacy of the 2005 privatisation legislation, which required the group to sell down its stakes in the bank and the insurer while the government sells down its own holding in the parent. Letter volumes have fallen for two decades against rising parcel demand, and the group has moved into logistics, taking a stake in the trucking company Yamato's partner network. Established in 2006, it listed alongside Japan Post Bank and Japan Post Insurance in 2015.
