Business Description
SMC makes the pneumatic components that let compressed air do work inside a production line: directional control valves, air cylinders and rotary actuators, fittings and tubing, filters, regulators and lubricators, along with air dryers, vacuum equipment and temperature-control units. It is not a robot maker and sells no finished machines — its parts are designed into other companies' equipment, and automatic control equipment accounts for essentially all of revenue. It holds roughly 60% of the Japanese market and about 40% of the world market, with customers outside Japan supplying around 81% of sales.
The moat is commercial as much as technical. SMC carries a catalogue running to hundreds of thousands of part numbers and variants and holds heavy inventory against it, so a customer's engineer can specify the exact component and have it quickly; a large direct sales-engineering force works alongside customers on that specification, and competitors struggle to match the breadth. Because those parts go into semiconductor, automotive, food, packaging and medical-device plants alike, the order book reads as a broad gauge of global capital spending rather than of any one industry, with semiconductor equipment the sharpest swing factor — and the model supports unusually high operating margins and a very large net-cash balance sheet for a machinery maker. Founded in 1959 to make sintered metal filters — the business the initials still refer to — it listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1987 and reports on a March fiscal year.
