Business Description
Komatsu builds excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders and dump trucks, together with a mining-equipment line of ultra-large haul trucks and electric shovels sold to iron-ore and copper miners. A separate industrial-machinery segment makes presses, machine tools and excimer lasers for semiconductor lithography.
Its distinguishing asset is Komtrax, the telematics system fitted as standard since 2001, which reports location, hours and fuel use from every connected machine and gives the company an unusually early read on demand — and a lever on used-equipment values and financing risk. Roughly 85% of revenue comes from outside Japan, so results turn on mining capital spending and North American construction. Founded in 1921 in Komatsu, Ishikawa, from which it takes its name.
