Business Description
FANUC makes the numerical controllers that direct machine tools, where it holds roughly half the world market, along with industrial robots, robomachines such as compact machining centres, and servo motors. Its controllers are embedded in the machine tools of hundreds of other manufacturers, so demand tracks global capital spending on factory equipment rather than any single end industry.
The company is unusual in almost every respect: production is concentrated at a single campus in Oshino, a village in Yamanashi at the foot of Mount Fuji, everything is painted the company's signature yellow, it carries no interest-bearing debt and it has historically run operating margins near 40%. Spun out of Fujitsu's numerical-control division and incorporated in 1972, it discloses less than most Japanese peers and holds no earnings calls in the conventional sense.
