Business Description
Japan Post Bank takes deposits from individuals across the post-office network and invests them, rather than lending heavily to companies. That makes it the country's biggest deposit-taker, with a balance sheet dominated by Japanese government bonds and foreign bonds and, increasingly, by a strategic investment portfolio of private equity, real estate and credit funds.
The structure leaves earnings unusually sensitive to interest rates: the Bank of Japan's exit from negative rates lifts the yield on newly invested funds while the cost of deposits rises only slowly. Established in 2006 during the privatisation of Japan Post and listed in 2015, the bank remains partly owned by Japan Post Holdings, whose gradual sell-down of the stake is a standing overhang on the shares.
