Business Description
HOYA reports in two segments. Life Care covers eyeglass lenses, contact lenses, intraocular lenses and medical endoscopes; Information Technology makes mask blanks and photomasks for semiconductor lithography, glass substrates for hard-disk drives, and optical lenses for cameras and projectors.
The mask-blank business is the strategic one: HOYA holds the overwhelming share of the substrates used for EUV lithography, which makes it a small but critical link in the leading-edge chip supply chain and one of the most profitable parts of the group. Operating margins above 20% and a long record of buybacks have made it a standing favourite of foreign investors. Founded in 1941 as a maker of optical glass and incorporated in 1944.
