HOYA CORPORATION

A precision-optics maker that supplies the blank substrates behind semiconductor photomasks while also leading the world in eyeglass lenses and endoscopes.

HOYA's plant in Tampines, Singapore

Business Description

HOYA reports in two segments. Life Care covers eyeglass lenses, contact lenses, intraocular lenses and medical endoscopes; Information Technology makes mask blanks and photomasks for semiconductor lithography, glass substrates for hard-disk drives, and optical lenses for cameras and projectors.

The mask-blank business is the strategic one: HOYA holds the overwhelming share of the substrates used for EUV lithography, which makes it a small but critical link in the leading-edge chip supply chain and one of the most profitable parts of the group. Operating margins above 20% and a long record of buybacks have made it a standing favourite of foreign investors. Founded in 1941 as a maker of optical glass and incorporated in 1944.
