Canon Inc.

The world's largest camera maker, now earning more from office printing and medical imaging as it pushes into semiconductor lithography.

Business Description

Canon reports in four segments. Printing — office multifunction devices, production presses and inkjet — is the largest by revenue; Imaging covers cameras and lenses, where it has led the interchangeable-lens market for over two decades; Medical is built on the former Toshiba Medical Systems, bought in 2016, making CT and MRI scanners; and Industrial covers semiconductor and display lithography equipment.

The strategic bet is nanoimprint lithography, which stamps circuit patterns into resist rather than projecting them optically. If it works at scale it would offer chipmakers an alternative to the extreme-ultraviolet machines only ASML can build, at far lower cost — but it remains unproven in volume production. Founded in 1937 to make Japan's first 35mm cameras, Canon reports on a December fiscal year.
