Business Description
AEON operates the widest spread of retail formats in the country: general merchandise stores, supermarkets, discount chains, drugstores, convenience stores and specialty retail, most of them gathered inside the large suburban shopping centres that AEON Mall develops and also leases to tenants from outside the group. Alongside them sit AEON Financial Service, which issues credit cards and runs consumer lending and a bank in Japan and across the rest of Asia, and a services arm spanning everything from amusement facilities to property management. The group has also been consolidating Japan's fragmented drugstore trade, taking Tsuruha Holdings as a subsidiary in January 2026.
The gap between where the revenue comes from and where the profit comes from is the thing most often misread about this company. General merchandise stores account for roughly a third of sales and supermarkets a little under 30%, but both work on razor-thin margins; the disproportionate contributions to operating profit come from AEON Financial Service and from the shopping-mall development business, whose rental income is steadier than anything that happens on a shop floor. Fixing the general merchandise format — squeezed for years between specialist chains, e-commerce and the convenience stores — remains the group's central problem. AEON is also the most internationally expanded Japanese retailer, with malls and supermarkets in Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and China, though overseas is still only about 9% of revenue. The business traces back to the Okada family's drapery shop in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, in 1926 and took its present holding-company form under the AEON name from the 1980s onward; it closes its fiscal year at the end of February.
