Business Description

Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Group is the holding company for Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, which takes deposits and lends like any bank but also carries on the trust businesses a Japanese commercial bank cannot: asset management and asset administration, custody, corporate pension trusts, real-estate brokerage and securitisation, stock transfer agency work maintaining listed companies' shareholder registries, and inheritance and will services. It ranks first in Japan by trust assets under management and custody.

That fee income is what separates the group's earnings profile from a commercial bank's: a large share of profit comes from managing, administering and recording other people's assets rather than from the spread between deposit and lending rates, so results track asset values, pension and investment-trust flows, property transaction volumes and corporate activity such as share issuance and M&A — although rising Japanese interest rates still lift the banking side. The present holding company dates from 2002 and took its current shape in 2011, when Chuo Mitsui Trust and Sumitomo Trust & Banking combined; it was renamed from Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holdings in 2024. The shares are listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime market, the primary listing, and on the Nagoya Stock Exchange Premier market, and the group closes its books in March.
