Business Description

Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group is the holding company of Japan's second-largest banking group, established in 2002 around Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation — itself the product of the 2001 merger of Sakura Bank and Sumitomo Bank. Group companies span commercial banking, leasing through Sumitomo Mitsui Finance and Leasing, securities through SMBC Nikko Securities and consumer finance through SMBC Consumer Finance.

The group has expanded aggressively across Asia through stakes in Indian and Indonesian lenders, and holds a capital and business alliance with Jefferies in the United States to build out its investment banking reach. Earnings are reported across wholesale, retail, global and markets business units.
