Business Description
ORIX operates through segments covering corporate financial services, real estate, private equity investment, environment and energy, insurance, banking and credit, aircraft and ships, and asset management, the last of these built around the Dutch manager Robeco. Earnings are deliberately spread so that no single line dominates the group.
That breadth is also the investment case against it: the conglomerate is hard to value on any single multiple and the shares have traded persistently below book value, which management has addressed with buybacks and by exiting sub-scale businesses. Founded in 1964 as Orient Leasing, the first company of its kind in Japan, ORIX now earns a substantial share of its profit outside the country.
