Sompo Holdings, Inc.

The third of Japan's big property-and-casualty insurers, and the one that pushed furthest into nursing care as a second business.

Business Description

Sompo Holdings is the parent of Sompo Japan Insurance, whose motor, fire and casualty policies supply most premiums, together with Sompo Himawari Life. Its overseas arm is built around Sompo International, the Bermuda-based specialty insurer and reinsurer formerly known as Endurance, which has taken the group well beyond the Japanese market.

What sets it apart from its two domestic rivals is a large nursing-care business, assembled by buying Message and Watami's care operations, which makes it one of Japan's biggest providers of elderly care — an unusual hedge on the same demographic decline that shrinks its insurance market. Like its peers, the group is unwinding a large portfolio of cross-shareholdings under regulatory pressure following an industry price-fixing scandal. The holding company was formed in 2010.
