MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings, Inc.

One of Japan's three giant property-and-casualty insurance groups, assembled from a three-way merger and unusually large across Asia.

Business Description

MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings is the parent of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance, together with a life arm, Mitsui Sumitomo Aioi Life. Domestic property and casualty — motor, fire and personal accident — provides the bulk of premiums, while the international business is built around the Lloyd's insurer MS Amlin and a wide footprint across Southeast Asia.

As at its peers, book value swings with a large portfolio of cross-shareholdings in Japanese corporates. Regulators and investors have pressed the industry to unwind those holdings after a price-fixing scandal exposed how closely the major insurers were entwined with their clients, and the resulting sell-down has become a material source of realised gains. The holding company was created in 2008 and the operating merger completed in 2010.
