Business Description

SoftBank Group Corp. is an investment holding company rather than an operating business. Its principal assets are the UK chip designer Arm Holdings, the SoftBank Vision Funds, the domestic telecom carrier SoftBank Corp., the payments platform PayPay and a stake in OpenAI.

Because most holdings are carried at fair value, reported net profit is driven largely by unrealized valuation gains and losses on the portfolio and can swing sharply from quarter to quarter with little change in underlying cash flow. The group was founded by Masayoshi Son in 1981 as a software distributor and moved into telecommunications before shifting to its present investment-led model.
