Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan Holdings Inc. (TSE: 2579), the largest bottler in the Coca-Cola system in Japan, reported consolidated results for the first half of the fiscal year ending December 2026 — the six months from January 1 to June 30, 2026 — under IFRS. Revenue rose 1.3% to ¥423,191 million, business profit rose 430.1% to ¥8,137 million, and operating profit came in at ¥9,098 million against a ¥92,170 million loss a year earlier, a swing of ¥101,268 million. Pre-tax profit was ¥8,763 million versus a ¥92,259 million loss, and profit attributable to owners of the parent reached ¥4,778 million against a ¥65,892 million loss, an improvement of ¥70,670 million. Basic earnings per share were ¥29.12 and diluted earnings per share ¥28.78, reversing a loss of ¥378.02 per share. The company said the result marks its first profitable interim period since 2018 — a gap of eight years.
Volume beat plan despite a wet June, and price revisions did the rest
Sales volume reached 234 million cases, up 1.5%, running ahead of the company's own plan even though unsettled weather in June worked against it. Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan attributed the growth to business-unit-level work on strengthening core categories, expanding shelf and outlet space, and marketing aimed at specific drinking occasions, which it said lifted competitiveness alongside volume. Price revisions improved revenue per case across almost every channel, and although channel-mix shifts pulled in the other direction, revenue still finished ¥5,248 million above the year-earlier period. The mix of volume and pricing showed up most clearly in the gross line: cost of sales actually fell to ¥233,549 million from ¥234,529 million, so gross profit rose 3.4% to ¥189,642 million and the gross margin widened to 44.8% from 43.9%.
Flat overheads and a shorter depreciation schedule drive the profit swing
Selling, general and administrative expenses were held almost flat at ¥181,762 million, up just 0.1%, so essentially the whole ¥6,229 million of extra gross profit fell through to business profit. Recurring other income rose 53.8% to ¥514 million while recurring other expenses fell 55.2% to ¥307 million; equity-method investment income slipped 29.8% to ¥51 million. The company said revenue growth and transformation-led cost reductions drove the profitability improvement, and that it had delivered more than 60% of its full-year profit-growth target in the first half alone while executing planned growth investment. One accounting change helped: as the first year of the "Vision 2030" medium-term plan, and in line with a policy of selective capital spending aimed at capital efficiency, the company reviewed the useful lives of manufacturing machinery and equipment, which reduced depreciation on those assets. The far larger driver at the operating line was a base effect — non-recurring other expenses collapsed 95.9% to ¥3,866 million from ¥94,543 million, which had been dominated by the impairment loss booked in the vending business in the April–June 2025 quarter. Non-recurring other income rose 475.7% to ¥4,827 million. Below operating profit, finance income of ¥169 million and finance costs of ¥505 million left pre-tax profit at ¥8,763 million; a ¥3,936 million income-tax charge — against a ¥26,415 million tax credit a year earlier — brought interim profit to ¥4,827 million, of which ¥49 million was attributable to non-controlling interests. Total comprehensive income was ¥5,045 million.
Vending turns profitable; OTC and food service both grow
All three reporting segments improved profit. Vending revenue fell 1.7% to ¥186,432 million, a decline of ¥3,228 million, but segment profit swung to ¥5,343 million from a ¥1,389 million loss — a ¥6,732 million improvement and the clearest sign that last year's restructuring of the channel has begun to pay. OTC, the largest segment, grew revenue 2.6% to ¥199,195 million and lifted segment profit 8.3% to ¥22,750 million, up ¥1,746 million. Food service was the fastest-growing line, with revenue up 15.7% to ¥22,952 million and segment profit up 10.0% to ¥3,136 million. The three segments together account for ¥408,579 million of the ¥423,191 million group total.
Inventories and borrowings up, equity down on buybacks
Total assets stood at ¥722,135 million at June 30, up ¥23,649 million from the December 2025 year-end, mainly on higher inventories — which rose to ¥88,967 million from ¥71,622 million. Total liabilities rose ¥38,181 million to ¥356,468 million, chiefly on an increase in bonds and borrowings. Total equity fell ¥14,532 million to ¥365,667 million, principally because of treasury-share purchases, and equity attributable to owners of the parent declined to ¥365,347 million from ¥379,892 million. The equity ratio therefore fell to 50.6% from 54.4%. Treasury shares held rose to 8,797,531 from 5,554,691 against an unchanged 171,268,593 shares issued, and the average share count for the period dropped 5.9% to 164,073,770 — a mechanical tailwind to per-share earnings. On the cash-flow statement, operating activities used ¥1,909 million (versus ¥1,694 million used a year earlier) as the inventory build offset depreciation and amortisation; investing activities used ¥8,706 million, down from ¥16,474 million, helped by proceeds from sales of property and intangible assets; and financing activities provided ¥17,515 million, against ¥25,123 million used a year earlier, as long-term borrowings more than covered buybacks and dividends. Cash and cash equivalents closed at ¥83,234 million, up ¥6,904 million.
Guidance untouched, annual dividend up to ¥72, buyback approved
Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan made no change to the full-year forecast it published on February 13, 2026: revenue of ¥902,700 million (+1.0%), business profit of ¥35,000 million (+42.7%), operating profit of ¥36,000 million, pre-tax profit of ¥34,700 million, profit of ¥22,600 million, profit attributable to owners of the parent of ¥22,500 million and basic EPS of ¥139.93. The first half therefore represents about 47% of the revenue plan but only 23% of the business-profit plan and 21% of the attributable-profit plan, a split the company has flagged before as reflecting the seasonality of Japanese beverage demand. The dividend forecast is also unrevised: an interim of ¥35.00, up from ¥28.00, with payment starting September 1, and a year-end of ¥37.00, up from ¥32.00, for an annual ¥72.00 against ¥60.00 for 2025 — a 20% increase. Separately, the board resolved at its meeting on July 30 to acquire treasury shares; the guided EPS figure already reflects the expected effect of that buyback, and the details are set out in the material-subsequent-events note to the condensed interim financial statements. The interim report is due to be filed on July 31, the results briefing was held the same afternoon, and the interim figures were not subject to review by a certified public accountant or auditing firm.
