Business Description

JX Advanced Metals reports in three segments: Semiconductor Materials at roughly a fifth of revenue, Information and Communication Materials at around 36 percent, and Basic Materials at about 44 percent, with some 35 percent of sales made outside Japan. Its commercially distinctive position is in sputtering targets — ultra-high-purity metal discs, principally copper, consumed in the physical vapour deposition step that lays down the wiring layers inside a semiconductor. It holds the leading global share in several of them, and because the purity specifications are extreme enough that qualifying a target with a chipmaker takes years, the position is hard to dislodge. Alongside these it makes rolled copper foil for circuits, compound semiconductor materials and precision electroformed products, while Basic Materials covers copper smelting and refining together with a recycling business that recovers metals from electronic scrap; the group also holds an interest in the Caserones copper mine in Chile.

The revenue split understates the advanced businesses: Basic Materials is high-volume, low-margin smelting and refining, while the two materials segments carry the profit and the growth. Earnings therefore turn at one end on semiconductor and electronics demand, and at the other on copper prices, smelting treatment charges and the yen, with recycling mattering more each year both as a source of metal and as an answer to customers' environmental requirements. The lineage runs back to the Hitachi Mine and, through most of its modern life, to Nippon Mining; the present legal entity dates from 2002. The company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in March 2025 in one of Japan's largest offerings in years, spun out of ENEOS Holdings, which has been selling down its stake, and renamed itself from JX Nippon Mining & Metals at the same time to mark the shift away from commodity mining.
