Business Description
Daikin sells residential, commercial and large-scale air conditioning worldwide, alongside a chemicals business in fluorine compounds and a smaller filtration and oil-hydraulics arm. Growth has come from buying its way into national markets — Goodman in the United States in 2012, OYL in Malaysia, Zanotti in Italy — rather than exporting from Japan, and the overwhelming majority of revenue is now earned abroad.
The fluorochemicals arm is the strategic asset: making its own refrigerants lets Daikin move first when environmental rules force a change of gas, as with the shift away from high global-warming-potential HFCs. Air conditioning is also one of the few businesses that gains from a warming climate and from rising electricity demand for cooling. Founded in Osaka in 1924 and incorporated in 1934.
