Business Description
Nidec built its position on precision small motors, above all the spindle motors that spin the platters inside hard-disk drives, a market in which it long held the dominant global share. From that base it expanded through a long series of acquisitions in Japan, Europe and the United States into automotive motors, including traction drive systems for electric vehicles; motors and compressors for home appliances; motors and large drives for commercial and industrial equipment, including cooling for data centres; and machine tools and other machinery. Founded in Kyoto in 1973 by Shigenobu Nagamori and three colleagues, it became known for acquisition-led growth and a founder-driven culture, and reports on a March fiscal year.
The company is working through a governance review. A third-party committee investigated accounting matters and delivered its final report in April 2026; Nidec published an improvement plan and status report in January 2026 and a revised version in April 2026, and in June 2026 obtained approval to extend the filing deadline for its annual securities report for the year ended March 2026. It is reconstituting its board under the banner "New Nidec", with director candidates and a new board and committee structure announced during 2026. Separately, in May 2026 it disclosed potential quality issues and set up an investigation committee of external experts, whose report was published in September 2026. The operating business continues, but while reported figures and governance remain under review, published numbers should be read with more caution than usual until the process is complete.
