Business Description
Renesas designs microcontrollers, system-on-chip devices and analogue and power semiconductors. Automotive is the largest end market — its MCUs sit in engine and body control units, and it is one of the handful of suppliers whose shortages stalled global car production in 2021 — with industrial, infrastructure and IoT making up the rest.
The company was assembled from the semiconductor operations of Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric and NEC, and after a state-backed rescue in 2013 it turned into an acquirer, buying Intersil, IDT, Dialog Semiconductor and the software firm Altium. That has shifted the mix toward analogue and connectivity and away from pure microcontrollers, but it also leaves earnings geared to the automotive inventory cycle. Incorporated in 2002, it reports on a December fiscal year.
