Business Description
TDK reports across passive components — capacitors, inductors and the ferrite cores it pioneered — sensors, magnetic application products, and energy application products. That last segment is now the largest: through the Hong Kong subsidiary Amperex Technology (ATL), TDK supplies the great majority of the world's smartphone lithium-polymer batteries, including to Apple.
The concentration cuts both ways: it ties a large share of profit to one customer set and to the handset replacement cycle, and TDK is investing to carry the same cell technology into wearables, drones and small electric vehicles. The company was founded in 1935 to commercialise ferrite, a magnetic ceramic invented at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and its name is an abbreviation of Tokyo Denki Kagaku Kogyo.
