Business Description
Kyocera makes semiconductor packages and ceramic components, electronic devices such as capacitors and connectors, industrial and automotive parts, cutting tools, solar systems, printers and mobile handsets. The core competence throughout is fine ceramics, the material the company was founded to commercialise.
For years the shares traded below the value of its financial holdings — chiefly a large stake in KDDI, the telecom carrier that Kyocera's founder Kazuo Inamori helped create as DDI in 1984 — which made the company a standing case study in Japanese conglomerate discounts. Management has begun selling down that stake and buying back shares in response to investor pressure. Founded in Kyoto in 1959 as Kyoto Ceramic by Inamori, later also known for founding Japan Airlines' turnaround.
