Business Description
Bandai Namco was formed in 2005 by combining Bandai, Japan's leading toy maker, with the video-game company Namco, and it still spans the physical and the digital in a way few entertainment firms do. Toys and Hobby is the largest segment at roughly 48% of revenue — Gunpla plastic model kits, collectible figures and capsule toys — ahead of Digital at about 35%, covering console and mobile games; Amusement, the arcades and entertainment venues it runs in Japan, contributes around 11%, and Visual and Music, which produces anime and holds music rights, about 5%. Some 42% of revenue comes from outside Japan.
The company is best understood as an owner and licensor of character franchises rather than a maker of any one product: it buys or creates the rights to a property, then sells that property as model kits, figures, console and mobile titles, anime, arcade machines and licensed goods. Because the creative cost is largely sunk in the franchise itself, an established property can be monetised again and again at high margin, and results swing with the strength of the slate in a given year rather than with any single product line. Gundam is the anchor — Gunpla has been sold for decades and capacity has been expanded to meet demand abroad — alongside Dragon Ball, Tamagotchi, the Idolmaster series and licensed work on One Piece. In games Bandai Namco publishes as well as develops: Elden Ring, created by FromSoftware and published by the group outside Japan, sold in very large numbers and showed it could reach a global core-gamer audience, while free-to-play mobile games built on its own characters are a large but more volatile source of profit. The main swing factors are the franchise slate and its release timing, the hit rate of mobile titles, and overseas appetite for Japanese IP, which has been growing structurally. It reports on a March fiscal year.
