Business Description
Mitsubishi Corporation is a general trading company — a sogo shosha — that both trades goods and owns the assets behind them. Its ten business groups span natural gas, industrial materials, petroleum and chemicals, mineral resources, industrial infrastructure, automotive and mobility, food industry, consumer industry, power solutions and urban development.
Earnings are anchored by upstream resource interests, above all Australian coking coal through the BMA joint venture and LNG projects, balanced by a large consumer arm that includes the Lawson convenience-store chain. Berkshire Hathaway began buying into Mitsubishi and the other four major trading houses in 2020 and has since raised its holdings, a vote of confidence that reshaped how global investors view the sector.
