Business Description

KDDI provides mobile, fixed-line and broadband communications, chiefly through the au and UQ mobile brands, and ranks second in Japan by subscriber numbers behind NTT Docomo. Beyond connectivity it runs a large life-design business spanning au Jibun Bank, the au PAY payment service, au Denki electricity retailing, insurance and online commerce.

A separate business arm sells corporate networks, IoT connectivity and data-centre capacity through the Telehouse brand, giving the group a stake in the build-out of computing infrastructure for AI. KDDI was formed in 2000 by the merger of DDI, KDD and IDO; the founding date it reports, 1984, is that of DDI, the first challenger to Japan's state telephone monopoly. The company has one of the longest records of consecutive dividend increases on the Tokyo market.
