Business Description
SECOM installs alarm systems in offices, shops and homes, watches them from central monitoring stations and sends guards when an alarm goes off — a model it pioneered in 1966 with Japan's first online centralised alarm system, and in which it holds the leading domestic share. Around that core it has built adjacent businesses: fire protection systems through Nohmi Bosai, medical and home-care services for an ageing society, non-life insurance, geospatial information and aerial surveying through Pasco, and information and communication services including data centres.
The security business is a stock-type model: customers pay a monthly fee under long contracts, so revenue recurs, earnings are unusually stable, cash generation is strong and the company has a long record of paying dividends. Growth comes from adding contracts and raising prices, while labour is the main cost pressure as Japan's workforce shrinks. Founded in 1962 as Nihon Keibi Hosho by Makoto Iida and Juichi Toda, it made its name guarding venues at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; its fiscal year ends in March.
