Business Description
Financial IT Solutions is the biggest segment: NRI builds and operates the back-office and trading systems used by Japanese brokerages, asset managers, banks and insurers, including shared platforms that several firms subscribe to rather than build for themselves. Industrial IT Solutions does the same for retailers, distributors, manufacturers and the public sector. Around those sit IT Platform Services — data centres, cloud and managed operations — and a consulting arm that is small in revenue but supplies the research and strategy work the NRI name is known for.
The shared-platform model is what distinguishes NRI from a contract software house: once a brokerage runs its business on an NRI system, the relationship becomes long-term, recurring and expensive to unwind, which gives the company unusually steady revenue and high margins for the sector. Growth depends on Japanese corporate IT budgets, on financial-sector consolidation, and increasingly on overseas expansion through acquisitions in Australia and North America; engineer headcount and wage inflation are the main cost pressures. NRI was founded in January 1966 as a research institute within the Nomura group and took its present shape when it merged with Nomura Computer Systems in 1988. The fiscal year ends in March.
