Business Description
Takeda concentrates on four therapeutic areas — gastroenterology, rare diseases, neuroscience and oncology — alongside a plasma-derived therapies unit and a vaccines business. Its best-known products include Entyvio for inflammatory bowel disease, the immunoglobulin franchise inherited from Shire, and Vyvanse for attention-deficit disorder.
The 2019 Shire deal lifted Takeda into the top tier of world drugmakers but loaded it with debt, and management has since prioritised deleveraging and the sale of non-core products. Roughly half of revenue now comes from the United States; the company is run from Osaka but managed as a global organisation with an unusually international executive team. Founded in Osaka in 1781 as a merchant of traditional medicines, it was incorporated in 1925.
