Business Description
NEC now earns most of its revenue from IT services and network infrastructure rather than hardware. Its segments cover IT services for Japanese government and enterprise customers, social infrastructure, network services sold to telecom carriers, and a global business built around the Danish IT firm KMD, the Swiss banking-software house Avaloq and the British public-sector integrator NEC Software Solutions.
Two specialisms stand out: biometric identification, where its face-recognition engine has repeatedly ranked first in U.S. government accuracy tests and underpins national ID and border systems, and submarine cable, where NEC is one of only three suppliers able to lay trans-ocean systems. Founded in 1899 as a joint venture with Western Electric, it was Japan's first company formed with foreign capital.
