Nintendo Co., Ltd.

The Kyoto games company behind Mario, Zelda and Pokémon, whose Switch platform became one of the best-selling consoles ever made.

Nintendo Co., Ltd. headquarters

Business Description

Nintendo designs and sells video-game hardware and software. The Switch family, launched in 2017, has shipped more than 150 million units and was succeeded by Switch 2 in 2025; software is dominated by first-party franchises — Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, Splatoon — that the company develops in house and sells only on its own machines.

That closed model makes margins depend on the mix between hardware, sold at modest profit, and software and digital downloads, which are far more profitable. Beyond games, Nintendo licenses its characters into films, the Super Nintendo World theme-park areas and merchandise, a strategy intended to reduce its dependence on the console replacement cycle. Founded in Kyoto in 1889 as a maker of hanafuda playing cards, it was incorporated in its present form in 1947.
