Marubeni Corporation

A general trading house that leans on agricultural inputs, power generation and aircraft leasing rather than on mining.

Business Description

Marubeni operates across food and agriculture, chemicals, energy, power, metals and mineral resources, transportation machinery, and finance and real estate. Its North American agri-inputs and fertiliser distribution business is one of the largest single profit sources, alongside a substantial independent power portfolio and aircraft leasing.

A heavy round of write-downs in 2020 forced a reset: management cut low-return assets, tightened investment discipline and rebuilt earnings around the agricultural and power franchises. Incorporated in its present form in 1949, Marubeni traces its roots to a linen trading shop opened in 1858, and is one of the five sogo shosha in which Berkshire Hathaway holds a long-term stake.
