Business Description

Sumitomo Corporation both trades goods and owns the assets behind them, through business units covering metal products, transportation and construction systems, infrastructure, media and digital, living-related and real estate, and mineral resources and energy.

Compared with the larger sogo shosha it leans less on upstream commodities and more on domestic media and consumer businesses — it is the controlling shareholder of the cable operator JCOM and of the IT services group SCSK — which steadies earnings but caps the upside when resource prices spike. Founded in 1919, the company traces its lineage to the Sumitomo house established in the seventeenth century, and is one of the five trading houses in which Berkshire Hathaway holds a long-term stake.
