Business Description

JR Central runs the Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka, together with 12 conventional lines in the Nagoya region. Transport accounts for about 82 per cent of revenue, retail roughly 9 per cent, real estate about 3 per cent and other businesses the remainder — a far narrower mix than at the other privatised JR companies, whose station retail and property arms weigh much more heavily. What non-transport business it has is concentrated around Nagoya Station, notably the JR Central Towers complex, which houses a department store, offices and hotels above the platforms and where the company itself is headquartered.

That concentration is the whole case, and it cuts both ways. The Tokaido corridor links Japan's three largest metropolitan areas, carries heavy business travel and runs at margins few railways anywhere can match, which makes JR Central exceptionally profitable for a transport operator; it also leaves earnings tied to a single line, so corporate travel budgets, the state of the Japanese economy and any disruption to that one route — an earthquake, a typhoon, a prolonged closure — feed straight through to the bottom line. Dominating the long run is the Chuo Shinkansen, a maglev line designed to cover Tokyo to Nagoya in about 40 minutes at 500 km/h, which the company is building almost entirely out of its own cash flow rather than with public money. The project ties up capital for decades and has slipped well behind its original schedule, principally because of a dispute with Shizuoka Prefecture over the effect of tunnelling on the Oi River water system. JR Central was created on 1 April 1987 in the break-up and privatisation of Japanese National Railways and became fully private in 2006; it is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime market, its primary listing, and on the Nagoya Stock Exchange Premier market, and reports on a March fiscal year.
