Sales grew 2.0%; every cost line grew faster
Papyless Co., Ltd. (TSE: 3641), the Tokyo operator of the Renta! (レンタ) e-book store and its related digital-content businesses, published consolidated results for the three months to June 30, 2026 on August 10, 2026 under Japanese GAAP. Net sales rose 2.0% to ¥3,667 million — a modest recovery after the prior first quarter's 10.4% decline — but the company posted an operating loss of ¥30 million against operating profit of ¥121 million a year earlier. Ordinary profit fell 12.5% to ¥42 million and the loss attributable to owners of the parent was ¥16 million, against a ¥1 million profit. Loss per share was ¥1.90, against earnings of ¥0.12, and comprehensive income was a loss of ¥37 million, widened from a ¥9 million loss.
The operating line is where the quarter was decided. Cost of sales rose to ¥1,999 million from ¥1,883 million, so gross profit fell 2.6% — to ¥1,667 million from ¥1,712 million — even though sales grew. Selling, general and administrative expenses then rose to ¥1,698 million from ¥1,591 million, ¥107 million more, and finished above gross profit. Papyless describes both pressures plainly: procurement costs from publishers and other content holders are rising as demand for content grows, and the advertising and promotion spending needed to attract customers is expanding in a crowded market. It adds that the tightening of targeting-advertising rules under the amended personal-information law has cut advertising efficiency, so the same promotional money now buys less. The company frames the advertising as deliberate — brand-strategy spending it calls a forward investment in medium- to long-term expansion — but this quarter it is the difference between a profit and a loss.
The ordinary profit is a currency gain
An operating loss of ¥30 million sitting beneath an ordinary profit of ¥42 million needs explaining, and the income statement explains it in a single line. Non-operating income totalled ¥75 million, of which ¥74 million was a foreign-exchange gain; interest income and the other listed items each rounded to under ¥1 million, and non-operating expenses were ¥2 million with no exchange loss at all. The prior year ran exactly the other way: a ¥72 million foreign-exchange loss was most of that year's ¥74 million of non-operating expenses, which is why operating profit of ¥121 million became ordinary profit of only ¥48 million, down 85.3%. Papyless sells through direct English- and traditional-Chinese-language Renta! sites and through the overseas distributor AAG (アルド・エージェンシー・グローバル株式会社), so the yen moves this line. Below it, tax is what produced the net loss: income, inhabitant and enterprise taxes came to ¥95 million against pre-tax profit of ¥42 million, and after a ¥6 million deferred credit the total charge of ¥89 million was more than twice the pre-tax figure. That left a quarterly net loss of ¥46 million, of which ¥30 million was attributed to non-controlling interests — which is the only reason the loss attributable to owners is as small as ¥16 million. Non-controlling interests on the balance sheet fell from ¥18 million to nil.
Renta! earns; the IP subsidiary being wound up does not
The two reported segments run in opposite directions, and the filing's own footnote matters here: segment profit totals to ordinary profit, not to operating profit. The e-book business grew revenue 2.0% to ¥3,668 million including inter-segment sales, and segment profit rose 76.6% to ¥127 million from ¥72 million — but because of that footnote the ¥74 million exchange gain sits inside the ¥127 million, so the segment's profit growth is not an operating result. Operationally, Papyless says Renta! passed 11 million members, helped by advertising across social media and video, coupon distribution, its own promotions and joint campaigns with major publishers. It is expanding the rental sales format, building out vertical-scroll comics for 5G handsets (タテコミ) and vertical animated video versions of manga (アニコミ), it launched a new original label called spRash!, began distributing vertical short-video content, and gave the first Renta! original short drama an exclusive early release.
The IP production business is the other side of the ledger. It is led by 60%-owned subsidiary JadeComiX Inc., which launched an original full-colour vertical-scroll comic label and put four new titles on Renta! as exclusive early releases. Revenue was ¥0 million — below the ¥1 million rounding unit — against none at all a year earlier, and the segment loss widened to ¥84 million from ¥23 million. On July 15, 2026, after the quarter closed, the board resolved to dissolve and liquidate JadeComiX, citing group-wide efficiency and a reorganisation to strengthen competitiveness. The shareholders' resolution is scheduled for August 31, 2026 and liquidation is to complete during FY3/2027. At June 30, 2026 the subsidiary held total assets of ¥18 million against total liabilities of ¥27 million, for negative net assets of ¥9 million. Papyless says the effect on profit and loss and on operations is still under examination, and the full-year guidance below predates the decision.
A cash-heavy balance sheet, a merger and a ¥1,100 million buyback
Total assets fell 1.6% to ¥13,118 million, of which ¥10,513 million is cash and deposits; receivables were ¥1,460 million and non-current assets only ¥818 million. Total liabilities fell 2.3% to ¥4,257 million and are almost entirely current — accounts payable of ¥1,329 million and advances received of ¥1,967 million, the prepaid balances of Renta! users — against ¥1 million of non-current liabilities. Net assets fell 1.3% to ¥8,861 million as retained earnings dropped to ¥9,404 million from ¥9,507 million, and the equity ratio rose to 67.4% from 67.1% because liabilities fell faster than equity did. The group also got structurally smaller during the quarter: Papyless absorbed its consolidated subsidiary Neoaldo (株式会社ネオアルド) in an absorption-type merger with Papyless as the surviving company, removing Neoaldo from the scope of consolidation. That is a reorganisation inside the group rather than a disposal, so no business left the balance sheet with it.
Two July resolutions will move the cash. On July 15, 2026 the board agreed to terminate the capital and business alliance with SEGA SAMMY HOLDINGS INC., signed in April 2023 to develop Webtoon content and services and to produce original content, with effect from August 31, 2026. The two companies say the alliance built development and production capability but, given changes in the operating environment, could not deliver what was expected of it, and that each is better placed to pursue growth independently; Papyless calls the effect on FY3/2027 consolidated results minor. The same board meeting authorised a buyback of up to 1,000,000 shares — 11.52% of shares outstanding excluding treasury — for up to ¥1,100 million, running from July 16 to September 30, 2026 through market purchases including the exchange's off-auction ToSTNeT-3 facility. Sega Sammy has told Papyless it intends to tender its entire 900,000-share, 10.37% holding into it. The buyback is therefore mostly the mechanism for buying the partner out, at a cost of roughly a tenth of the quarter-end cash balance.
Guidance is unchanged, and the arithmetic it now requires
Full-year guidance is unchanged from the forecast published with the FY3/2026 results on May 15, 2026: net sales of ¥15,328 million (+4.0%), operating profit of ¥334 million (+162.4%), ordinary profit of ¥391 million (−18.7%) and profit attributable to owners of the parent of ¥127 million against a loss last year, for earnings per share of ¥14.72. The dividend forecast is also unchanged at ¥10.00 for the year, all of it at the year-end, matching FY3/2026. What that leaves is demanding. A first quarter that lost ¥30 million at the operating line means the remaining nine months must produce ¥364 million of operating profit to reach ¥334 million, and the first-half guide of ¥114 million requires ¥144 million in the second quarter alone; the first-half net-profit guide of ¥1 million (−97.7%) puts effectively the entire ¥127 million in the second half. The guidance also already assumes a much thinner non-operating cushion than last year's, since operating profit is guided up 162.4% while ordinary profit is guided down 18.7% — arithmetic that only works if the gap between those two lines narrows sharply. This quarter it went the other way, and a ¥74 million currency gain is not a plan.
